The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andric

The bridge was erected and destined to be the platform for many drastic events such as the rebellious attempt of a worker, Radisav, to sabotage the progress of the bridge, which resulted in his public execution. The scene of his impalement is extremely graphic and repulsive, it even causes for the Balkan people to feel compassion.4 Once dead, Radisav's body is ordered to be thrown to the dogs, but the Christian people of the town desperately feel the need the give the corpse a proper burial. After a lot of persuading, they finally get a hold of the corpse and are able to give it a secret burial.5 The way Andric shows that the Turks, although after committing such a barbaric act, allow for the Christians to at least give the body a proper burial, demonstrates a sense of flexibility within the multiethnic community of ViĊĦegrad. .
Andric further elaborates on the multiethnic fabric of the region as he does a phenomenal job in showing the different views of each religion. He accomplishes this by recounting anecdotes, many of which occur on the bridge, such as the story of the bride who jumps off the bridge to avoid a loveless marriage or the tale of the defying gambler who plays with the devil. Although, at different stages of the novel, it may seem like one religion is crueler than the other, Andric makes it clear that there is always someone being affected regardless of which religion or ethnicity they belong to. An example of this is when Alihodja, a Muslim, has his ear nailed to the bridge by another fellow Muslim simply for not wanting to partake in a stand against the Austrians. This is great example of how Muslims, even within their own community can also be brutal with one another because of their strong beliefs.6 and support of corporal punishment. Most of this transgressions often occurring on the bridge. The bridge also often becomes a shocking sight with the exhibits of the beheaded people.
