The Practice of Female Genital Mutilation


            On most continents, people follow the tradition of their families and/or beliefs that they must follow. Some of these traditions are wise and great. Others are horrible and treacherous. Female Genital Mutilation is one of those horrible traditions. Female Genital Mutilation is an issue that needs to be abolished forever. Female Genital Mutilation also known as FGM/Cutting affects many women around the world. In the article, Cracking down FGM it states, According to the world health organization, Female Genital Mutilation affects 140 million women worldwide with majority cases occurring in Africa and the Middle East. (Mercy 1). Many women around the world had to undergo the tragic procedure of being mutilated from tḧe genital area. The amount of women who went through this procedure as well as as many women who has to deal with this atrocity is outstanding. For those who aren't familiar with FGM, endfgm.edu states, Female Genital Mutilation, also known as female circumcision or cutting is defined as all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs. (Unknown 1). This describes what FGM actually is and how the procedure is done. This is why FGM affects many women around the globe.
             Female Genital Mutilation happens everywhere in the world, but it mainly happens in Africa. In the article from Cracking down FGM it states, Though FM cases happen also in Asia and the Middle East, the vast majority of cases occur in 28 African countries affecting girls aged between 4 and 15. A good 98% of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan. (Mercy 2). Even though FGM is happening all over, it mainly happens in the continent of Africa. In the article, FGM it states, The prevalence of FGM was high overall but varied substantially across countries in western Africa. In Sierra Leone, Gambia, Burkina, Faso, and Mauritania, the prevalence of FGM was 94%, 79%, 74%, 72% respectively.
