Theatre Review - Company

In the Florida State University School of Theatre, director Nathan Norcross and his team of designers failed to unify the elements in the "world of the play" to convey a clear understanding of the concepts presented in the production of Company based on the choices of plot structure, scenic design and costume. The theme in Company, the importance of relationships in a life worth living, is difficult to grasp because of the lack of continuity in "world of the play." The flash backs that were intended to explain the marriage and relationships were not clear and therefore, were not effective. This is an example of how a good theme can fail when the elements do not work together. .
Norcross and his team of designers failed to produce an effective plot structure that the audience could understand and follow. One reason why this play produced a feeble plot structure was because the play jumped around from scenes that did not relate to the one before or after it, which made it hard to understand. The director did not make it clear whether or not some scenes were flash backs about what happened before, or if they took place recently within the time period of the play. One example of this was when one scene took place on Amy and Paul's wedding day where Bobby asked Amy to marry him after she backed out of her own wedding and then the scene that followed took place in Bobby's apartment with one character holding a birthday cake for Bobby and the five couples surrounding him with no clue as to when each event took place. The jump between the two scenes that were unrelated confused the audience as to when the scene before took place because in the first scene it was the day of the couple's wedding and Bobby asked Amy to marry him then the next scene took place on Bobby's birthday when the couple was already married. There was not one certain thing the actor repeatedly did to show the audience when it was the present and when Bobby was showing the audience an event in his past, which can make it difficult to fully comprehend what was happening in the play.
