A Raisin In The Sun

"There are some ideas we ain't going to have in this house. Not long as I am the head of this family" (Hansberry 1745). As Lena strives to understand her children's values, the belief in God is one thing that she will not allow to be disrespected.
Walter Younger is a desperate man that values money and success even if it is at his family's expense. Walter uses money as a measurement for success. He struggles throughout the play to attain his dream and to make his family understand. But in his desperation to attain his fortune he allows his dream to come between him and his family. Walter becomes so obsessed with poverty and so dissatisfied with his place in life that he strays from the family values that his mother strives so hard to instill in him. Walter's values took many twists and turns throughout the story. Through his wife, Ruth, we are led to believe that Walter's preoccupation with money is both recent and unexpected. "No. Mama, something is happening between Walter and me. I don't know what it is-but he needs something-something I can't give him any more. He needs this chance, Lena" (Hansberry 1740). Walter's desperation to become rich and successful has led him down a destructive path that harms his relationship with his family. Walter's newfound set of values in money causes considerable stress for his family. He no longer cares about the importance of family and their happiness. Walter becomes self-centered and solely focused on wealth. He grows envious and resentful of those that have achieved his unfulfilled dream. "Don't you see no stars gleaming that you can't reach out and grab? You happy? -You contented son-of-a-bitch-you happy? You got it made? Bitter? Man, I"m a volcano. Bitter? Here I am a giant-surrounded by ants! Ants who can't even understand what it is the giant is talking about" (Hansberry 1760). Walter's lack of success leads him to blame his wife for his unfulfilled dream.
