Worldwide Freedom of Speech

"If we're going to preach freedom of expression around the world, we have to practice it" (Saletan 93). "Practicing" means to accept what others believe in. When one hears for the first time of the hate crimes in the West, it would be strange to not feel surprised. Being so uninvolved with what happens to other countries other than the U.S. can shock one by the simple thought of not being able to express their thoughts without being punished. If another individual would express their similar thoughts but on a different topic and did not get punished, you would immediately realize that the laws are unequal when it comes to the freedom of speech. In the article "How Can We Ban Insults Against Jews but Not Muslims?" William Saletan writes of the unfair laws of the freedom of speech, which leaves its readers aware of the news they have missed, surprised that they missed it and shocked with the unjust laws created to oppress the freedom to share ones beliefs.
Being aware of the hate speech situation that is happening is only a small step to knowing what is really going on and how it is a "stage of global progress." The thought of having the right of speech taken from us is frightening. One would not be able to express themselves in any way in fear of the law. Where does the line between expressing one's belief and being hateful towards another person's belief exist? It does not exist. Anything one says another can find offensive. Nobody believes the same thing because everybody is different. Being aware of that, why are people getting arrested, or worse, for expressing beliefs that are not equal to others'? No one can force another person to believe what he or she think because everybody already has a way to think and express personal thoughts coming from different experiences. "Freedom of opinion and of expression are core values guaranteed universally which must be protected.
