Flag Burning

            When thinking of a symbol of the United States of America, the first item that wonders into my head is our flag. Ever since our nation has been established, the flag has represented the freedom that exists in our great land. It has flown in every battle of war that our soldiers have bravely fought in. The meaning of the flag is far greater than just a simple symbol. It is a representation of the struggles that our country has been through to become a powerful nation. I firmly believe burning the flag in our country to express opposition towards our government or nation should be an illegal act.
             While the War of 1812 was taking place, Francis Scott Key was granted access to a British naval boat to negotiate the release of an American prisoner. While he was patiently waiting on the ship, Fort McHenry was being annihilated by the British Fleet. When the battle ceased, Key looked out of his window and noticed the American flag was still standing. The attack by the British had failed. Profoundly moved by this outcome, Key wrote a poem. This poem became our national anthem. .
             Every military conflict that the United States has partaken in, our flag has had a significant role. During the Civil War, the flag was lowered. This procedure symbolized the beginning of the war. One of the most dramatic spectacles during World War II occurred when the Marines took over Iwo Jima. The Marines fastened a worn out flag to the end of a pipe. A few Marines helped each other and together they raised the flag upright. This minuscule action has demonstrated the love many possess for our country regardless of the circumstances one is dealt with.
             The flag has also represented times of peace. We are taught to honor the flag. Flag Day is a holiday in the United States.
