My Birth Reflection

For my communications assignment I am going to describe the birth of my third and last son in 2004. I had two sons previously in 1998 and 2001, they were both vaginal births. My 3rd son was due on May 9th and was born on May 9th, it was Mother's Day that year. I plan to reflect on the entire experience, not only the birth but a bit of postpartum, too. My goals for this birth were to have a non-medicated, vaginal birth, with my mother and husband present. My expectations were that I would be able to achieve this goal with no problem, I did not expect to have a Caesarean birth with my third child. .
When I found out I was pregnant with my youngest son I was about 6 weeks pregnant, due to insurance changes I wasn't able to use my previous OB doctor. There weren't many options in my town at the time, so the only other OB doctors that I had to choose from had a waiting list and I wasn't able to get an appointment until I was almost 12 weeks along. When I finally got into see who I thought would be my new doctor we discussed my current pregnancy, my past pregnancies and births. When the high birth weight of my previous son came up she wanted to discuss a planned C-section. In my previous medical records it was recorded that my son was born with mild shoulder dystocia, so she thought that I should consider a caesarean because of that. I explained that the shoulder dystocia was indeed mild, that my baby was not injured because of it, and that I had no intentions of having planned caesarean. .
Throughout the rest of my pregnancy I saw both of the doctors that worked there and an APN. It was always a different person at every appointment that I had and I found myself repeating myself a lot of the time. No one ever seemed to be on the same page with my birth plan. .
During the last trimester of my pregnancy, the female doctor in particular continuously discussed the possibility of another high birth weight and the option of a caesarean.
