That's right – these additives in our food such as pesticides, chemicals, and antibiotics are not healthy for the human body whatsoever. If these additives in our food cause harmful effects to the body, then American consumers should avoid consuming these foods. These new food production additives and technologies, such as GMOs, are still growing and up-and-coming, yet they are included in just about every manufactured product on store shelves. GMOs have not been researched enough yet for them to be used as widely as they are being used today. Therefore, some things need to be changed. The government needs to take action for its people and educate Americans about GMOs, create new laws and bans on certain additives, and make labeling potentially harmful additives mandatory on every product.
First, let me further explain what GMOs are. GMO stands for genetically modified organism and the term refers to any plant or ingredient in a product that has had its genes manipulated for a desired effect. The desired effects are usually to create an invulnerable product in terms of pests and infections. Farmers will be able to reduce herbicide and pesticide use by 50%. Scientists are even able to manipulate foods to increase components such as nutrients. These are the arguments that support the use of GMOs, for the manipulation of foods at the genetic level just may be the answer to a lot of problems. For example, GMOs can offer increased production of a product by speeding up the growth rate and can potentially save a lot of starving people in developing countries, along with poverty-stricken Americans. With the issue of increased pesticide and herbicide use on farms and the increased antibiotics use with animals, GMOs offer an alluring alternative for handling these problems. Infections that attack farm animals are becoming stronger due to the increased tolerance to antibiotics from their wide use.
