Work Patterns and Social Factors

However considering that computers complete most work, this results in fewer opportunities for full time employment in some industries. This alters the working patterns, as there is a growth in contract and causal work instead. .
Technology as a social factor does have some effects on the changing patterns of work. In relation to shiftwork, some industries such as media, banking and finance will increase to compete with competition in the global market. Thus more jobs will be created within this pattern of work. Although shiftwork can be required at irregular hours in order to maintain and service the 24-hour computer-operated machines. For example an individual who is a technician/device programmer obligated to work for long night hours, they will not be able to see and spend time with their family and friends hindered from their social life, playing a negative impact on their social wellbeing. Also the irregular hours of shiftwork may also affect their physical wellbeing negatively as they may overwork their body and lead to tiredness and stress. .
             Family Circumstances.
Another social influence which impacts on work patterns is changing family circumstances. As a family shifts through its lifecycle, it will bring about modifications in the work patterns to suit the structural change. For example the birth of a child in the family, affects their working pattern as the new mother may need to take maternity leave from her full-time work or may need to shift to casual or job share to allow for the demands of parenting. Rather then being completely unemployed the parents may need to still work part time in order to provide and support their family needs especially if they have children. Much varies on what individuals see as their primary needs and priorities as they move through their lifespan. Also family friendly work practices e.g. part time, working remotely allow flexibility in hours, some workplaces have enabled time off for parents to adapt to the changes.
