Life Lessons in To Kill a Mockingbird

Scout Finch grew up in an odd time in American history. Racism and prejudice were going on daily. In, "To Kill a Mockingbird," by Harper Lee, Scout was fortunate enough to be surrounded by people that taught her crucial life lessons. Ms. Dubose and Boo Radley taught scout important lessons on bravery, and her father, Atticus Finch, taught her about equality. .
Firstly, Atticus taught Scout many important life lessons, but most importantly, he taught her to not be prejudiced, and to treat everyone with equality. This was extremely important in Scout's growth as a person, because in those days, many people were blinded by racism; Scout learned to treat all people evenly. Atticus actually led by example when he took on Tom Robinson's case. Anytime Scout would make comments about others, or ask him questions, Atticus would tell scout not to judge others. For example, when they had Walter Cunningham, Scout's classmate, over for dinner and he drowned his food in syrup. Scout was confused by this, and made a rude remark. Atticus later explained to Scout that Walter, being of a lower social class, is not used to having syrup at the dinner table, and did not know how much to pour. That shows that Atticus looks past social classes, and treats everyone evenly. Scout was fortunate to have a non-judgmental father figure like Atticus Finch. .
Secondly scout was lucky to have Ms. Dubose as a neighbor. Without realizing it, Scout learned a lesson about bravery from Ms. Dubose. Ms. Dubose was a morphine addict. After she became sick, and knew she would not be around much longer, she managed to kick her addiction so she could spend her last times alive, thinking clearly for once. After Jem destroyed Ms. Debose's flower for a comment about his father, Atticus forced the children to go read to Ms. Dubose everyday; knowing it would help her kick the addiction, and also knowing it would help teach the kids about true bravery.
