            Optimism is essential to the achievement and the foundation of courage and immense progress. Thus, optimism is the key to happiness. The general meaning of optimism is to have hopefulness and confidence in a successful outcome. It is essential to be optimistic to maintain a healthy life and virtually increase one's life longevity. It is never too late to change from the pessimistic mind set to the optimistic. Studies prove that optimists do more and achieve more simply because they know they can be successful by having a positive outlook and taking chances.              Optimism is an attitude that keeps one centered on what is good about a present or a future situation. Optimism means seeing the glass "half-full" rather than "half-empty"; the optimists find the good in in the world. Optimists set higher goals for themselves; furthermore, resulting to greater success in achieving goals. Positive thinking, moreover, makes the optimist's goals seem more attainable. Gratitude is also associated with optimism and has been determined that grateful people are happier, receive more social support, are less stressed and less depressed. .
             Optimism is the ultimate key to surviving. Optimism gives one energy; it makes efforts feel worthwhile. Optimistic people generally have a better chance obtaining more life satisfaction and self-fulfillment. A sense of optimism promotes not just psychological health, but physical well-being as well. Optimism is linked to life longevity, and according to Dr. Hilary Tindle of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, "Optimists have a 16% lower risk of having heart attacks"(Tindle). Optimism can have an effect on a person's immune system, as well. In one study, elderly adults were immunized for influenza. Two weeks later, their immune response to the vaccination was measured.
