Jamaica's Fishing Industry

The Jamaican fishing industry has been fighting to survive as it has had to conquer quite a number of adversaries to be alive today. The constant development of the Jamaican coastline in order to build hotels, resorts and recreational attraction for the tourism sector to thrive is causing a reduction in the quantity of fishes that are available for harvesting. This is caused as the development of the coastline which impacts the surrounding mangrove areas which is used by fishes to spawn their eggs and causes a rise in the fish population. The removal of these areas hinders the reproduction process which causes the fall in the number of fish available overtime. This reduction in the fish population is inevitable as the coastline will always be the greatest asset to the tourism industry and will always be developed and subsequently polluted. Its effects can be soften through the rehabilitation of the mangroves that are left, the river mouth located close to the mangroves can be cleaned so that fishes will want to come into the area to spawn. The fishing industry has been hit hard by a series of hurricanes. Many fisher folk were wiped out and most do not have the capacity to borrow to re-engage the process. Most have no insurance and their savings are limited. They have been forced into inactivity which has resulted in hardships for them and their families. This is not an industry to take lightly as many lives depend on it. Unfortunately, many in the industry lack the capacity to coordinate its sustainability. Fishing becomes an easy and logical option for persons who live in coastal towns and have very little skills and no job opportunities. .
However, it is becoming harder to survive from this activity. Stocks have been in decline for some time. In fact, a look back at the history reveals that as far back as 1945, Earnest F. Thompson, working on behalf of the British Colonial Office, concluded in a report on the fishing industry that the north shelf and south shelf of the island were overfished and proposed a department of fisheries to implement programs to monitor the fishing industry.
