Gutenberg


            
             Over six hundred years ago people had to hand write their books because there was no such thing as a printing press. Books were so rare that the books in churches were chained to the tables. But one German pioneer by the name of Johannes Gutenberg would change all of that. In 1440 Johannes Gutenberg completed his invention of the printing press, which was wooden with replaceable wooden or cast iron letters. (Jayce).
             Johannes Genfleisch Gutenberg was born in Mainz, Germany in1398. He was from an aristocrat family named Gensfleisch, although most of the time he used his mothers name Gutenberg (Feldman 16). Gutenberg's family, who were very rich and powerful, moved in 1428 to Strasbourg because of the rivalry between the townspeople and rich families (Jayce). Johann's fathers" name was Friele Gansfleish he met is wife, Else Wyrich, outside a pottery shop. They were married in 1386. The couple had three children Fiele, Else, and Johann.(2) Johann's father worked at the Mainz Mint and Johann frequently accompanied him to work, which gave Johann many experiences. He acquired many tips from goldsmiths and jewelers on how to carve and make metal. Those tips would help him with his invention later in life. (Jayce) .
             In March on 1434 he took a place suitable for his rank in the upper class of the city, but at the same time he was teaching lower class citizens the art of gem polishing, the manufacture of looking glasses and printing. .
             He lived in Strasbourg for twenty years; in his spare time me met a girl by the name of Ennelin zuder Iserin Thure. The two began dating and soon were engaged. As a result of such a long engagement Johann decided not to marry her, she was furious and actually tried to sue him. Eventually Johann won the case. (Jayce).
