The Human Spirit - Visual Analysis

Can a picture of a sculpture capture the essence of the human spirit? The sculpture in the photograph was created by Lincoln Fox and carries the name "The Strength of One". It was given to Pinellas Baptist Church in 1993 by the Bass Fisherman of America during a world famous bass tournament.  At first glance, the sculpture is that of a physically stronger man helping a weaker man. With deeper analysis of the details, one can see the elusive qualities of the spirit captured in physical form.
The strength of the larger man is captured in a few different ways in the sculpture. The first of these is the physical placement of the larger man above the smaller individual. The next can be seen in the muscle definition of both individuals, with the larger man displaying much larger defined muscles. The strength of the larger man is most notably seen in the manner in which he is holding and pulling back the smaller man. The enlargement of the biceps and chest muscles on the larger man lend validity to his strength. The stronger man represents the stronger of society reaching out to help his weaker less fortunate brother.
The expressions captured on the men's faces speak volume to the theme of this sculpture. The weaker man clearly displays an expression of distress. I would expect the stronger man to display and expression of exertion. Instead, the stronger man's expression is of one of commitment to the cause. I think this was a great way to depict the essence of mans will and determination to reach out to others and create a balance. Lincoln includes many details in the sculpture that represent our environment and the struggles faced with in it. The eagle represents an array of characteristics that are indicative of mans spirit. The first to catch the eye is the stance of the eagle with the head pointed up and the wings spread as if he were soaring high. I believe this represents mans lofty visions of grace and ingenuity in pursuit of new possibilities.
