The Reality of Birth Order

Have you ever heard of the expression "black sheep of the family, or the "baby of the family" even if the person is way over their toddler stages? Well these types of portrayals can be associated depending on the birth order. For the people who don't know what birth order is, Birth order refers to the order a child is born, for example first born, second born etc. Today I will be talking about how birth order has an affect on one's life by affecting the parenting styles towards their children, shaping someone's personality, and determining their career path. .
No matter the circumstances parents will always have a love and bond towards their children and try to treat all their children equally, but in most families this is not the case. In an article posted in the Huffington Post written by Dr. Gail Gross, stated that, "I know that no two children have the same set of parents, even though they live in the same family. Why? Because parents are different with each of their children, and no two children ever take the same role." (Gross, 2013) Parents will tend to treat their children differently depending on the order. In the case of the first born, according to famous theorist Alfred Adler, parents will treat them more strictly because they want them to set an example to the younger ones; causing most firstborns to be prone to perfection and affirmation. In Robertson Davies "Fifth Business", for example, Mrs. Ramsey, was very strict with Dunstan, she forbade him from seeing the love of his life and continuously beat him. .
Mrs. Ramsey honestly believed she was doing what was best for her son and was trying her best to lead him towards the right track since he was the first. On the other hand however, there is the youngest child; also know as the "baby of the family". Generally the last born child in families tend to be more dependent upon others and spoiled because they have had their parents take care of them for the majority of their adolescence; there is no other younger child around for the parents to focus on or worry about.
