The Spread of Buddhism

The spread of Buddhism was due to its no cast system so when it reached China people took to this new religion. Not everyone liked Buddhism because it wasn't from China and didn't respect their personal history as a nation. Though Buddhism was viewed in many different ways in China the spread of Buddhism reached and affected everyone.
Additional documents are ones from a women's perspective from both upper and lower class to see one what their opinions were and to also with the difference of classes how they viewed Buddhism. This would be interesting because of Buddhism no cast system and even though there wasn't really a cast system in China there was a social hierarchy. Also a document from someone from the lower middle class like a merchant whom this religion was targeted to and how they felt about the spread. All of the documents provided where either written by a scholar, the emperor, and Buddha so there is no other perspective than an intellectual.
It seems like some of the more high up officials and or scholars were not a fan of the spread of Buddhism because; they believed that barbarians spread Buddhism to China and they were unconvinced about the religion because it mention no former history of China. (Doc. 4) They do not like Buddhism because it originated from a different culture than theirs and in document 4 Han Yu is a Confucian scholar so he has some prejudice to other religions and beliefs. The emperor of the Tang dynasty (doc. 6) was not a fan of Buddhism also because it was new and because he thought people were leaving their place of work to go become a monk so he was unsure how the country would survive. He also referred to Buddhism as a vine spreading until it had poisoned the culture of China. Some didn't welcome Buddhism because it was so knew and that made people uneasy about the religion.
In document 5 a Buddhist scholar is defending all beliefs whether it be Confucius, Laozi, or Buddhism.
