Winston and Julia in 1984

The relationship between Winston and Julia becomes a strong symbol in Orwell's 1984. Julia and Winston's relationship was a rebellious one towards the disliked Totalarian party of the Oceanic government, which was most interesting because they both worked for the government altering historical facts to fit the government's agenda. The relationship they built was a deep nest of lust and rebellion and this brought change to the characters themselves. First, I would like to describe how Julia influenced Winston to externalize his anger towards the government of Oceania. Second, I would like to discuss how their intimate relationship united their cause and fostered a more dangerous situation for the two of them. Third I would like to discuss, the betrayal of Winston toward Julia and how he eventually devoted his allegiance to the party. .
Winston was a quiet individual, harboring his hatred for Big Brother mostly in fear of getting caught. Julia was a free spirited woman, who almost openly rebelled against the Oceanic government and their micro managing and controlling demeanor. When Winston and Julia became lovers, Julia's behavior seems to rub off on Winston. Winston finds himself openly discussing his hatred for Big Brother including the readings of Anti-Party manifesto and getting involved with other rebellious groups. I also found Winston to gain confidence through his relationship with Julia. .
While reading the novel I started to develop an analogy of fire and gasoline to describe the relationship between Julia and Winston. It is hard to say which character was which, but I am more leaning on Julia being the gasoline to Winston's fire. Originally, Winston hated Julia for her spirited behavior at work but eventually grew feelings for her. I think they both put themselves in danger with their deadly mixture of hatred towards the party. Julia seems to hate the party when they do something to directly effect something she cares about or believes in and Winston hates the party completely, all the time.
