Forced Mobility and Energy Resources

At the rate of consuming 1000 barrels of oil each second in combination with global energy consumption at 13 terawatts, or 13 trillion watts of power demanded per year, the carrying capacity of Earth, which is the maximum population of a species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, has become incredibly overtaxed (Armaroli & Balzani, 2007). Despite our realization of this however, energy and resource consumption rates are still increasing, with the side effects being transmitted to future generations or in the form of heavy burdens to the more vulnerable in society (Armaroli & Balzani, 2007). .
Neoliberalism is the term that describes the current dominating ideology in the global economic sphere. Originating from an economic philosophy in the 1930's, neoliberalism has helped to build a societal structure that has fostered this increase in energy production and resource extraction (Mirowski & Plehwe, 2009). From privatization to deregulation, market orientated political doctrines are now prevalent more than ever due to this idealism, which some have argued, "produces both higher income inequality and lowered social cohesion" (Coburn, 2000). In a world now grossly focused on profit maximization, many governments have turned towards prioritizing economic desires when conducting their responsibilities to citizens. One main responsibility that governments possess is to foster stability in society's development. But now, with the state in many nations being seen often aligning with the demands of the market's major players, a new form of state intervention dubbed as 'neo-developmentalism' has come forth to coexist alongside neoliberalism (Hall & Branford, 2012). Neo-developmentalism has prompted actions focused on economic desires, such as forcing populations to move in order to accumulate land for energy production or resource extraction. .
