Theoretical Perspectives of Technology and the City


Ultimately technological innovation can be perceived as another way to make money. This theory does not look at technology as a solution; a repercussion of this thinking may be the planned obsolescence of products and technologies. .
             In Toronto the urban change may not be to achieve improvement but to increase ones capital. One example of this may be the destroying of older architectural buildings and replacing them with condos further congesting the already densely populated city. The last perspective is social construction of technology view point or SCOT for short. SCOT also views technology as being a part of society such as dystopianism but differs because SCOT theorizes that society as a whole has a part to play in the changing future. This means that capitalism may be a part of innovation but it boils down to if society has a choice to accept or reject the change. An example of this can be Google glass when thinking about the future, if it is accepted by society it may change the very way in which people interact and be immersed in technology on another level than just smart phones. .
             These points may be important to the professors because for starters understanding the different theoretical perspectives can help better understand this course, it gives one the ability to distinguish the different ways technological advances can help shape society. Furthermore it will better allow you to understand the reading and realize what mindset or prospective the author may have had while writing the article. Learning about different perspectives can also help you figure out where you lay in regards to the future, if you prefer a dystopian society or a utopian society for example may motivate you in different ways. .
             The second concept that I think is one of the most important when it comes to understanding cities in general. It is important to understand the properties that make a city and in module 1 the course directors state the four main properties of a city.
