Short Story - Coming of Age

Two slim Jims, one Game Boy Color. Sam still had sleep in her eyes, but she tried so desperately to hide it. I helped her into the lifted pick-up truck, even though she insisted she could get in by herself. The loud engine roared and we both shifted in our seats uncomfortably. Raising a little girl into a woman is a constant power struggle, not sure what to take and what to give. If you push her too hard, she feels bombarded; if you remain distant, she never feels your love, and develops issues about love and support. There was no handbook in how to do this, no tool to make this any easier. What do I even talk to her about anymore? Boys? No, too young. And I don't want her thinking I approve of that yet. She's too old for the generic, child answers, but far too young for adult questions about herself. I looked at her from my peripheral sight to take a measurement of the mood I was dealing with.
"So, think you can stay quiet the entire time we're in the woods?" I stumbled out the first age-appropriate thing I could think of. .
"Oh yeah. I'm not Victoria. I can stay quiet for however long I need to. I have my Game Boy. If I get bored I'll just play my Pokemon," Sam so elegantly retorted back at me, as if she had known I was going to ask the question and she had been thinking out her answer for hours. She was so bright beyond her years, which scared the hell out of me. .
"Okay yeah, but you don't wanna be playin' your game the whole time-what if you miss a deer going by? I may not be able to get your attention," Shit. That came out too harsh. I cringed as soon as it spilled from my mouth I looked over at her as she searched the midnight scenery for an answer but instead she just shrugged and laid her blonde head on passenger window. If I could only get into her head for a few minutes. Just to understand what she's feeling, how she's feeling about everything. She has to be so scared right now.
