The Influence of English Education in China

" (Zhang, weiwen Pg1) the English also became a required class to high school students. In college, there were College English Test band 4 and band 6 for students, and this grade influence on their college degree. "The People's Republic of China began to offer EFL lessons to third graders of all primary schools in 2001." (Chang, Bok-Myung Pg6) The reason why Chinese government did that was because China joined the WTO in 2001 and begin would hold the 2008 Olympic Games.
The process of English education is very interesting. In China, learning English focus on vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and hearing. No speaking is required. Maybe in college, English major students would need it. However, for other students speaking is nothing to worry about because there were no tests on it. Vocabulary in English education is very important. In College English Test (CET), there are two specific lines about vocabulary requirements. CET-4 is 4000 words and CET-6 is 6000 words. It shows that how vocabulary is important to students. Grammar is the most tested thing on the English test in China. In China, if a student doesn't know anything about grammar, his English test must less than 60 points. However, if that student doesn't know anything about reading either, his English test must less than 20 points. Reading has same tested rate as grammar to students in China. The only things left are writing and hearing. Writing and hearing are not that important like vocabulary. If a student could write something in English and understand what the English CD said, it is enough to that student.
For me, I learned English from third grade. My experience told me that learning English in China is really useless. The reason why I conclude in that way is because what I learned in China was really useless. In China, if someone wants to learn English very well, the only thing need is to have a good memory.
