John Lennon, Music and Christianity

When thinking about media that reflects faith, one normally would not think of John Lennon, or his music, as an example of this. John Lennon was the legendary founder of the best selling band band to date, The Beatles. After his days with The Beatles, Lennon continued to make music and perhaps his most well known song "Imagine" has evoked emotions of humanity including Christians. John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, during WWII. Over his lifetime Lennon gained international recognition first as a musician but also as a humanitarian. Born and raised a Liverpool boy, Lennon started his first band at the age of 17, a band that would later become The Beatles. Alongside friends Paul McCartney and George Harrison, these young men would become international stars.
Both religiously and politically, Lennon was a figure of controversy from his early days in the working class environments to his assassination in 1980 in New York City. A statement that caused a lot of scrutiny, Lennon's claim to be bigger than Jesus was certainly blown out of proportion. With this statement, the backlash ensued and led to record burnings and boycotts that had never been seen before. Many Christians condemned Lennon and The Beatles for making such a profound statement. According to a later interview however, Lennon explained that irreverence was not his intention at all. He went on to explain that it was a statement that he directed at the fact that The Beatles seemed to have more influence on the youth of the nation than Christ. .
John Lennon's view of Christians began at an early age. Although Lennon was born into and baptized in the Anglican church, he expressed how he felt Christians were 'uptight'. Later in his life when he wished to marry Yoko Ono in a church he was not permitted to do so because he had previously been divorced giving him reason to believe that Christians were hypocritical.
