Cosmetic Surgery - Beauty or Beast?

The possibility of death cannot be ruled out in any surgery (McKenzie, Adam). Therefore, putting life at risk for the potential to improve appearance is senseless. It is necessary to distinguish between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. In case of accidents, when a person's appearance is ruined, reconstructive surgery is indeed necessary and helpful. However, the health risks taken during plastic work make it extremely unethical to have cosmetic surgery.
In addition to health issues, cosmetic surgery also poses monetary problems. This procedure is a major waste of money from a financial standpoint. First of all, prior to a surgery, people do not recognize the enormous amounts of money they are throwing into the cosmetic industry. According to the American Academy of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Americans spent over $7 billion in 2012 on surgical procedures alone (ASAPS). The average facelift costs $6,500 and a nose job cost over $4,000 (Average Total Costs). This pool of money can be used on a variety of things that are much more beneficial and pose less physical and psychological risks. Aside from the initial surgery costs, many do not recognize the financial aftermath of the surgery. Many cosmetic patients have unreasonably high expectations and believe that the surgery will give them the permanent results of their dreams (Jennifer, FNP-C). .
On top of this, many physicians downplay any risks. As a rude awakening, people realize that results are often not magical and many patients come in for extra work if they are unsatisfied or if the surgery results are not lasting. This doubles and triples costs of the procedure. Cosmetic surge is a slippery slope and can become a psychological addiction, leading to a misuse of valuable money. Overall, cosmetic surgery is a poor choice of investment and should not be considered. .
Despite and physical and financial drawbacks, cosmetic surgery often has lasting psychological benefits.
