Rules and Standards for Safe Highways

Younger drivers also get into more accidents because they have less road experience and do not always recognize when a collision is about to happen. A page from the book of preventing Teen Motor Crashes by the National Research Council points out that "during their first six months of solo driving, newly licensed drivers are about eight times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than are more experienced drivers" So new drivers are more likely to cause accidents around them, but is this really the main cause of car accidents?.
             Another significant cause of automobile accidents is distractions such as cell phones and food. A driver who is attempting to multitask while traveling in a car is only giving a portion of their attention to the road and is less likely to notice if they are swerving into other lanes or into the path of other vehicles. Lastly, speeding is also a big factor to take into consideration when thinking about the main causes of car accidents. A driver who is speeding puts themselves and other drivers in great danger by significantly reducing their reaction time even if they know they are about to hit another vehicle. A faster car is harder to control and maneuver. After speculating about all these causes and I decided that the greatest danger to drivers is speeding. Speeding increases the accident risk of all the other causes I have previously mentioned. Each of the causes, drunk driving, underage driving, and distracted driving are only made worse by being combined with speeding. An underage driver, a drunk driver, and a distracted driver are more likely to get into an accident if they are traveling way beyond the speed limit. This does not mean that the other causes are less important or that they should be accepted into society, I just believe that speeding would have the biggest impact on reducing vehicular deaths if it was prevented from happening on public roadways.
