Final Paper - Citizen Kane

That's it!" This really shows the audience how they should be viewing Kane and what kind of interpretation they should have. The relationships that Kane has with Emily and Susan both share a common theme; which is that he is demanding of them. He told Susan that she had to keep doing the opera, even though she didn't want to. He was very powerful and didn't really care how they felt as long as they didn't embarrass him or show him up. One prop that develops throughout the movie is the sled. Kane has this playing out in the snow when he is a young boy. He then receives a new sled at Christmas which the audience sees he is not happy about. We then learn that Rosebud is the sled and something that has given him great comfort in life. The snow globe, Rosebud and the statues are the only possessions that carry meaning for Kane throughout his life and this shows that although he didn't show much compassion or love, he was soft at heart when remembering his youth and his beloved sled. The statues represent a state of power for Kane. They are nothing more than images of people, which he can easily control. He can place them where he wants and even ignore them if he chooses. Over his statues, Kane has power: to acquire, to own and to control. Statues eventually replace living people in Kane's life, and he dies surrounded by these figures. .
Kane's external goal is that he wants to be powerful and he believes that money can buy him power. The internal goal that Kane needs is to be loved. Kane is the protagonist, otherwise known as the main character in this movie, with the reporter Jerry Thompson and Kane again, being the antagonist. Although, we don't really get to go inside of Kane's head, it would be hard to discuss the reporter, Jerry Thompson as the protagonist. Jerry's life is always cast in a shadow. He doesn't really have a character arc and just lives through Kane's life. The character arc that Charles Kane has is that by the end when Susan is leaving, he realizes what a horrible man he has been.
