Ancient Athens and Sparta


Lastly in Spartan society, only Spartan males over the age of 30 were allowed to vote by shouting their vote to the assembly and the loudest votes would be discussed. (The Greek Multimedia,1) In contrary, the Athenian council established a system of white (yes) and black (no) pebbles to vote. (Vendramini) Everyone was allowed to vote and all votes were taken into consideration, resulting in the outcome of a more accurate and fair series of laws. In conclusion, the Athenian society brought forth an abundance of democratic innovative ideas to Ancient Athens, contrasting Sparta. .
             Athens society rights superseded those of Sparta's, which reflected their democracy. In Spartan society, everyone belonged to the state. At the age of 7 boys were taken away from their families to engage in military training until they were elders. They were deprived from freedoms and luxuries in order to create a militaristic society. (The Greek multimedia, 2) In contrast to this, Athens provided their citizens with a citizenship, which granted Athenian born an abundance of rights. A citizenship allowed the individual to attend assemblies, serve on the council, act as juror, take part in festivals and fight in the military. They revolved around participation in order to prosper. (Goldhill, 1) Additionally, a literacy education in Sparta was not a priority. Boys and men were educated in choral dance, reading and writing but this type of education was greatly limited. The state emphasized military and athletic training to fortify the Spartan army. Men were only taught enough writing and words to communicate basic needs. Athens was the opposite; they encouraged education that benefited the development of their society. Males were taught many things such as reading, writing, mathematics, music, philosophy etc. Due to the advancements Athens made in their educational system, the first scientists, historians and mathematicians evolved in this society.
