Tattoo Culture of Late Adolescence and Early Adulthood


(Swan) In the year 2012, various studies show that between 17-21% of all Americans had one or more tattoos. To help explain this phenomenon it is very important to understand the thoughts of the younger generations when it comes to receiving tattoos. .
             The following is an interview with Anthony Mascolino about his thought and experiences with tattoos:.
             "What is your name .
             My name is Anthony Mascolino.
             How old are you and where are you from.
             I am 23 year old white male from upstate New york. .
             What is the extent of your education?.
             I graduated from Carmel High school in 2007, and then from Dutchess Community College in 2010 with an associates degree in liberal arts.
             What was your first tattoo of?.
             My first tattoo was a celtic cross with a banner running through it that I designed with the quote "Tomorrow is too late, I live for today." on my left upper arm. .
             Why did you get it? Does that quote have a particularly significant meaning to you?.
             Although I had always been fascinated by tattoos, my mother was against them 110% and always tried to push me away from the lifestyle, warning me it would lead me no where. Most kids Get their first tattoo on their 18th birthday but my first time in the chair was at age 20; It was briefly after my 'graduation' from the recovery of a horrible accident I was involved in. On sunday October 5th of 2008, at roughly 9:00 pm, I was struck by a drunk driver. He was doing over 90 mph in my lame when he hit me head on. Sparing the small details, I was badly burned, and broke several bones, including my right femur. My feet were shattered completely in the wreck. I later suffered a pulminary lung embolysm in the critical care unit of St. Francis and was almost killed. I went through 3 surgeries and countless months of physical therapy between them. I also had to re learn to walk twice; needless to say, it was an experience, but one that I learned greatly from and rose above learning to take each day and live to it to the fullest, because tomorrow is not always promised.
