Symbolism in The Book Theif

This expresses to the reader the mass scale of humans dying under orders of Hitler, reminding us that this isnt just a novel, this happened in our society under a century ago. Zusak uses colour within the novel to portray key ideas on the concept of mortality and how it may affect the reader's life. It draws an interesting contrast in the way that it isn't life that's shown through colour but death. The symbolism of colors relates the novel to our society as our world is a colourful place, and by reinforcing the symbol throughout the novel Zusak has continually expressed humanity on a colour spectrum of life and death and how that is relative to mortality.
The second symbol I found unmissable in The Book Thief was Hans Hubermanns accordion and the way it reinforces the idea of hope and distraction in this horrific period of time. This symbol is first introduced when Liesel arrives at Himmel Street, dismayed and distraught. Hans plays the accordion to try and ease Liesel from her past, to lighten the mood and escape from her new reality caused by the Nazi regime. Throughout the novel the accordion becomes symbolic of life and humanity to the audience, music being something all humans relate to in some way or another. Throughout society music is often used to soothe, it brings inner peace and is useful for calming and distracting children. This is seen through Zusak's characterisation of Liesel and the way music distracts her from her environment. The accordion brought life back to Liesel when she arrived at Himmel street, as well as symbolising the life, hope and survival of Max Vandenburg. When arriving on the doorstep of his last option 33 Himmel Street fearing death and in very poor condition max queries "do you still play the accordion?". Max is then let into the Hubermann household, given security, food and warmth. Zusak uses this phrase to express the hope Max held surrounding this symbol.
