A Lack of Rules in Lord of the Flies

The conch is used to call assemblies and only the person holding the conch is allowed to speak. The boys use the conch as an authority figure but later there is a chance they are going to start to abandon this idea. Once the conch is blown the boys immediately start an assembly almost as if it were an order. If the conch is simply held up the boys stay silent the same way you stay silent and pay attention to someone that has power over you. In the next section of the novel the power of the conch starts to slowly fade away and the boys are starting to show their inner evil.
By the middle of the novel the conch is disfigured and the boys are starting to turn more savage as the conch begins to fades. Jack goes off by himself along with the hunters to go kill a pig, and they do not have the conch. "I painted my face-I stole up. Now you eat-all of you-and I-" (Golding ch4 pg. 119). We now start to see the effect of the conch's power fading away because when they were on the island for the first time the boys were civilized now they are resulting to killing animals. This is savage because in a civilized society you would go to the butcher to buy your meat but now they are killing an animal and cooking it. Ralph is arguing with jack about what to do and who is the leader. "Something deep in Ralph spoke for him. "I'm chief. I'll go. Don't argue" (Golding ch. 6 pg. 155). Jack and the hunters are becoming wild at a quicker rate than Ralph and his group. It seems like Ralph is struggling to protect the power of the conch and Piggy is trying to protect the power of the conch. However, Jack and his tribe constantly disrespect it and ruin the peace and order. Jack is influencing every kid on the island to turn evil, resulting in the lowering or diminishing of the power of the conch. The conch is quickly losing its value and its order that keeps the boys in tact. Overall the conch loses almost all of its power towards the middle end of the novel but in the end of the novel all of its power is removed.
