In the events leading up to Kennedy delivering his speech one was the Cuban Missile Crisis. "In 1962 the United States and Soviet Union clashed once again" [ CITATION The05 l 1033 ] . This was due to the Soviets attempting to spread communism. With their attempts they built missile launchers capable of launching nuclear missiles that could reach the United States in Cuba. This was discovered after the U.S. sent a U-2 spy plane over Cuba and discovered it. In response Kennedy established a team of advisors named Excomm to deal with the threat they faced. The team came up with several possible options; negotiations, a naval blockade, launching a tactical air strike on the missiles, or an all out invasion on Cuba. On October 22nd Kennedy made a televised address to state that a naval blockade on Cuba will be put in place to bar any military material from getting to Cuba. On October 25th several Soviet ships stopped mid route rather than be searched. Negotiations soon began between both sides, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev sent a letter saying they will remove the missiles if the U.S. does not invade Cuba. On October 27th Kennedy agreed to one of Khrushchev's requests in not invading Cuba not did not agree to the other of removing the missiles from Turkey. On October 28th radios announced Khrushchev agreed to Kennedy's terms [ CITATION The05 l 1033 ]. .
On June 26th, 1963 President John F. Kennedy delivered his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in Berlin in response to the attempted spread of Communism around the world by the Communist party during the cold war.
