Book Report - NightJohn

Sarny noticed that John was much darker than most slaves she had seen. .
That night after the slaves had come back from the fields to the quarters John asked for some chewing tobacco, Sarny of course had some but she had learned not to give away things but to trade things. John agreed to trade chewing tobacco for letters. Sarny at first did not know what letters where. She once saw "some funny lines" on the side of a feed sack and drew them in the sand. As soon as Mammy saw the writing she told Sarny to never do that because slaves were not allowed to read or write. The first night John taught Sarny the letter A. A slave by the name of Alice got caught going into the main house. Waller whipped her and when a slave was being whipped all the other slaves had to watch. A few days after Alice was whipped she tried to run away. Sarny knew it was wrong for slaves to run away, not because it was wrong but because none of them ever got away. She had only two slaves ever try to run away. The first one was Jim. He ran away in the middle of the night. He ran through a river and on top of a stone wall so the dogs could not find his scent. But the dogs unfortunately caught drift of his scent, so Jim climbed a tree to get away. The tree was not big enough for Jim so his legs hung down and the dogs tore at everything they could reach. Even after Jim died he still held onto the tree and the master left him there for the birds to eat. The second was Pawley; he would run out to a nearby plantation to spend time with a girl. He would make it back before wake up every time except the last time. He was caught walking back to the quarters. The master let the dogs attack him and then the master cut him so he could not run away anymore. Unfortunately Pawley bled to death. Sarny and Mammy spent the rest of the day patching up Alice. That same night John taught Sarny the letter B. That was also the night that Mammy caught John teaching Sarny.
