World Religions - Buddhism and Christianity


             Both religions believe in the afterlife of human beings, which according to the religions, is defined by either goodness or evil. Buddhists consider life as retribution from Karma and it is because of this reason that the human race undergoes suffering in their entire lives. In Christianity, it is believed that man erred in the Garden of Eden, which forced God to evoke the punishment. In both religions, the essence of living in the world is not for happiness on earth, but for an eternal one after death to those who live in accordance with the teaching. Buddhism holds that the attachment of man with the world produces suffering as a result of bad actions, while detachment of man from the world, through practicing Buddhist religion, can eliminate suffering. In the Christian dimension, the philosophy of the concept of suffering is a result of man's deviation from God's ways as stipulated in the Bible (Wilson, 2006). A man can only eliminate suffering through salvation and following the lessons of Christ. There is a conspicuous likeness in both religions: in the emphasis of doing well to others and exercising love to humanity. The role of life according to the two religions and views of the western philosophies concur, in that they tend to give significance and meaning to life and make it more pleasant to humanity. .
             Despite some elements of similarities exhibited by both religions, considerable contrasts are drawn from their values. In Buddhism, there is no concept of God as the Supreme Being, but there is a belief that man can be in harmony with the nature through practicing Buddhism and attaining wisdom. However, Christianity strongly believes in existence of God as the supreme beings and the creator of nature and the human race. Christians also believe that God is the dispenser of divine justice. Man was made in the image and likeness of God to dispense creator's will. Christians engage in prayer as a way of communicating with God.
