Kennewick man

The features of Kennewick Man are described as different from those of a "typical" Native American's facial structure. This in fact is in it's self-untrue; archaeologists have identified four distinct groups of people who migrated to this hemisphere from Siberia and Asia. One of these groups known as the Ainu, who are indigenous to Japan and the Polynesians are a people with light coloring and "European" features. (8,9) Unfortunately the term"Caucasiod" was misinterpreted by some as meaning "Caucasian".
Scientists believe that Kennewick Man's DNA might prove that the peopling of the America's was more ethnically diverse, thus changing the accepted theories of how and by whom the America's were populated. The scientists argue that the Native Americans fear that further study will reveal that their ancestors were not the sole inhabitants of North America. This is not only disturbing but also insulting to Native Americans. The objections the Native Americans have to the study of Kennewick Man are firmly rooted in their history and are political, social, and religious in nature. These objections are deeply entwined into the very fiber of the Native American people, much of which has to do with the United States government and it's long standing historical intent to eliminate vs. recognize Native American culture. A prime example of this is the treatment of tribal burial sites. To the Native Americans this has been a desecration of their ancestors. Over the century's collectors and amateur archaeologists has plundered Indian burial sites to collect souvenirs, and in the past crude and often callous excavations were preformed in the name of science. This was done with little or no care to the Native Americans. Also a large part of many Native American religious belief states that once a body is interred, it must remain in the ground. As stated by Armand Minthorn, a religious leader of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation "Scientists have dug up and studied Native Americans for decades.
