Fieldwork Experience: Special Needs Students

The assessment consists of 2 parts. The first being fine motor skills, where the client is asked to write, draw, use a pair of scissors and grasp fine objects etc. The second part is gross motor skills, where the client is asked to participate in more physical activities like running and ball control skills. We were going to do a Moderate Needs Screening assessment to identify any possible barriers to the client's recovery and assess his ability to work. My supervising therapist and I got to the reception, introduced ourselves to the client and his teacher, and enquired about the best place to conduct the assessment. The client, my supervisor, the physiotherapist and I were taken to a room with couple of workstations. The client seemed relaxed which was unusual to me considering we were unfamiliar adults to the client. .
Both my supervisor and the physiotherapist were very friendly to the client. I guess there was no reason for the client to feel uncomfortable. I initiated the assessment by explaining to the client what he had to do before each task as we went along. I was pretty confident about what to ask the client to do for the assessment, as I had seen my supervisor conducting the Moderate Needs Screening on other clients before. I first asked the client to write the alphabet and numbers. He then had to draw straight/curved lines and his own body image. He was then asked to cut straight and curved lines with scissors. After that, I had to assemble some Lego blocks for the client to imitate. And finally, I had to ask the client to participate in a memory activity where I have to pick 5 items from a bag, then I had to put them away, the client had to tell me in order all the items I just selected. During the assessment I noticed that the client used his left hand for the majority of the tasks and that he had adapted to using his left hand very well. I was asked to look for a number of skills from the client during the assessment which included reading, writing, fine motor skills and problem solving skills.
