59). However, whilst living in Cardiff she is very self-conscious about her appearance, and generally appears to be very emotional and insecure. "It was true, she was his bride and wanted to love him desperately, but he made it so difficult for her at times." (l. 55-56). Lata is trying to love her new husband, but the cultural difference in between them makes it difficult at times.
Anuj' and Lata' relationship is quite complicated in the sense that they are both very different culture-wise. In order for them to live a happy life together, Lata must adapt to her current surroundings and realize that she is going to be married to Anuj for the rest of her life. In this story, Lata undergoes a change: "Yeah, I'm alright. Let's go home." (l. 150.) In this quote, Lata is referring to Cardiff as her home. This is a big step for her in the process of adjusting, as she previously in the story was referring to India whilst talking about home. Anuj grew up in India as well. He has been living in Cardiff for 6 years now, and portrays himself as a Welshman. He is trying hard to make Lata adjust to her new life, asking her if she wants to eat at a restaurant or go to the movies. He is very well mannered and generally wants to make his new wife happy. The thoughts of Anuj aren't described in the text, which makes him quite flat as a character, as he is only described by his actions. .
"They walked out of the theatre, bright-eyed and tired. Lata was happy, having spent three hours in sunny Mumbai, reliving her past. ()As they stepped out into the parking lot, the bitter wind struck her face with a resounding slap. She was brought back to the present () Lata sat in the car and burst into tears. "(l. 135-144) This quotation is really important due to it being the point where Lata realizes the enormous cultural difference in between India and Wales. When she comes back from the movie that almost brought her back to India for three hours, she sits in the car, and begins to cry.
