Understanding the Transgender Community

The language used in reports differs due to the audience; for example, in reports directed towards the government in the hope for policy reform, the language and formatting is precise and in bullet points, highlighting the key information in a clear way. In the report by the NCTE, a chapter called "Reforming Police and Ending Anti-Transgender Violence" gives a brief intro into the problem at hand, noting that in the LGBT community "nearly 3 out of 4 of lethal crimes [are] committed against trans women and girls," and when they seek refuge in the police "22% of transgender people reported police harassment [and] bias-motivated assault by officers" (25). Beneath the introduction is a list of policy advances that the government has made, as well as needed policy changes, such as ending the Racial Profiling Act and implementing the Violence Against Women Act's nondiscrimination provisions.3 The author targets the directed audience by formatting their report in a clear and precise way, which is necessary because, with policy reform, it's important that to be clear with what changes need to be made. .
Compared to the knowledge of the gay and lesbian community, most people are generally unaware of the discrimination and everyday struggles transgender men and women face. Society has stigmatized those in the transgender community, and while there are a handful of transgender men and women in the media, there hasn't been much public education in regards to curbing ignorance and intolerance. Written reports whose targeted audience is the general public differ in language against reports directed to the government, because, according to GLAAD, "understanding [their] audience and meeting them where they're at with the language and descriptions [the transgender community uses] is essential to connecting with those undecided Americans who can move from ambivalent to supportive when [they] reach out in terms they understand".
