Picasso was born an artist. When learning to speak he would state "peas" after every syllable which means pencil. Picasso would imitate his father before he could even speak. His father dreamed just as Picasso eventually would, to be a professional painter. Picasso's first portrait of his father looked depressed due to his failure of becoming a professional painter. Picasso originally studied art under his father then went to the Academy of Arts prior to moving to Paris. .
In 1901 Picasso moved to Paris where he found as the ideal place to practice new styles and experiment with a variety of art forms("Biography of Picasso film"). This is where Picasso would begin his work in surrealism and cubism style, which he was the founder of and created many distinguished pieces which were influenced by these art forms ("The Art History Archive – Cubism"). In 1937 Picasso created what many may call his best work, Guernica.
Picasso made his first trip to Paris in 1900, then the art capital of Europe. This is where Picasso would begin the period known as the blue period (1901-1904) of Picasso's art career. The blue period is characterized by somber, blue and green paintings. There, he met his first Parisian friend, the journalist and poet Max Jacob, who helped Picasso learn the language and its literature. Soon they shared an apartment. These were times of severe poverty, cold, and desperation. Much of his work was burned to keep the small room warm ("Frans Jacobs Fine Art – Pablo Picasso"). .
In 1904 Picasso and an anarchist friend published five issues of an art magazine titled "Young Art". He also met a French artist named Fernande Olivier, a bohemian artist who became his mistress in Paris in 1904.
