Notes on To Kill a Mockingbird


            
             Harper Lee, born April 28 in 1926, is an American author mainly known for her one and only novel "To Kill A Mockingbird". The main protagonist portrayed in this book (Scout Finch) was based on her own life experiences as a child. Ms. Lee won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Quill Award for Audiobook for this novel. .
             Audience.
             The author intended for young adults and people her age to read this book. The people who read this book today are mostly young adults and teens because they are mature enough to understand the messages behind the story and to feel what she went through.
             Characterization .
             Stephanie Crawford: Stephanie Crawford could be known as the town 'gossip'. She is quick to judge and always seems to know just about everything on everybody. She seemed to have a strange knowledge of the activities that occurred in the Radley house.
             .
             Calpurnia: The domestic caretaker of the Finch household. In the beginning, it seems that Calpurnia and Scout don't get along much, but as the story progresses, they begin to grow closer.
             Charles Baker Harris (Dill): Dill was the friend of both Jem and Scout Finch, and Scout's fiancé. He visits them every summer, and his main goal throughout the book was to get Boo Radley to come outside.
             Setting/Time.
             This story seems to have taken place during the 1930-1940's because of the way that the economy is described. It seemed to have taken place in the years during and after the Great Depression. .
             Place.
             This setting of this story is in Maycomb, Alabama, because in the first chapter, it talks about how Scout's great grandfather moved to Maycomb, and it also talks about their current life in Maycomb. .
             Social Context.
             In Scout's class, the teacher talks about Hitler, meaning that they live in the time period shortly after World War II ended. Also, because of the way all of the adults try to make Scout wear dresses.
