The Militant Suffragette Campaign and Women in 1918

A well-known historical quote that can illustrate this factor from Angela Holdsworth "The early Suffragists were a well-connected group of women who used their influence to try and persuade powerful men to take up their cause". This, and all our other gathered evidence in this factor clearly shows that this campaign did effectively contribute to how women gained the vote in 1918.
A further reason for Women gaining the power to vote in 1918 was their own work during the World War 1 period. As Britain declared was on Germany in 1914 all of our men were sent to France and Germany to battle for our country. But with all the men living and fighting in foreign countries, who was left to look after us lot back home? Women. Women now had to step up to the challenge of taking over what were once jobs only made for men to do. Women "single handily" ran our country for those four years day in, day out. Two days after was first declared the NUWSS suspended it's political campaign for the vote and the government released all WSPU prisoners and in response the WSPU agreed to stop their campaign. This happened so that they could step up and prove to the government that they were worthy of a voice in this country that they were now in hands of. This is a large factor contributing to why women gained the vote as it gained a massive amount of respect for women. A quote by Craig Mair, "Britain at War" states In June 1918 a new law have the vote to all women over 30. There were few complaints about this. The Suffragettes had won their battle by contributing to the war, not by their violent methods". This quote to say that overall the result of women gaining the right to vote was sorely down to how much they managed to contribute through war time.
Changing attitudes to women also affected their achievement in getting the vote in 1918. The campaign at the time for women was taking place at the same time were attitudes towards women were being changed in British society.
