Prufrock may feel that he does not fit to this particular society. "My morning coat, my collar mounting firmly to the chin." He is still wearing a shirt that is a casual shirt for men in the Victorian age. There is another custom of that age which has been practiced in this poem, the British afternoon tea. "Before the talking of toast and tea" and "After tea and cakes and ices," Prufrock is still struck in the old age and feels that he doesn't belong to this society because he does not follow the conformity. Thus he wants to escape from this situation like the etherized patients waiting to be sent to the operation room, Prufrock is also waiting to sink in another world where he can fit more. Moreover, he is also disappointed from the unfulfillment in romantic love. In the poem, Prufrock keeps talking about the women. He repeats the sentence that "Women come and go talking of Michelangelo" for two times, talking about the formulating eyes, white and bare arms, perfume, a shawl, and skirts, showing that he concerns with ladies too much. As the women repeatedly talks of Michelangelo, the readers can interpret that they are so interested in him who is smart, famous, successful, and so attractive, or it is to say that they are superficial and materialistic who only values just the looks and appearance. While Prufrock himself is nothing when being compared with Michelangelo; he is bald and thin, his youth is already faded away, and he does not succeed in anything because of his indecisiveness. "Is it perfume from a dress that makes me so digress?" As a result, those women are not interested in him and he has to cure his lonely heart by the escapisms instead.
Due to his unsatisfied conditions in his real life, Prufrock consciously escapes to the 'Fantasy' or his imaginary world where he can express freely and not be criticized from others.
