The Fall on Education: Standardized Testing

Standardized test have a long lasting effect on students teacher, and parents. It causes more spending, more time on the test, more test preparations and in the end the results are unnoticed and do not reflect nicely. Standardized testing shows, "systems that simply pressure teachers to raise scores on one test (or one set of tests in a few subjects) are not likely to work as advertised"(Koretz). .
Standardized testing encourages competition between teachers in the school. The teacher whose students score the highest on the test gets a bonus or the teacher will get an award. Though good teaching should be rewarded, it should be rewarded because the teacher has taught the students not crammed a lot of information in a student's head so they can pass the test. The teacher lose sight of the students and uses the education for their own hidden agendas. .
Recently author Anya Kamenetz wrote a book called The Test. Kamenetz states, " They are making the teachers hate teaching, high stakes standardized tests deprofessionalize teaching because they give outside authority the final say"(20). It is the teacher who went to college to further their education and become well in the subject they are teaching so when outside sources tell the teacher how to teach it is limiting the teacher's ability. Kamenetz continues to state, " The testing company determines the quality of teachers' performance"(20). How does each student individual score reflects the teacher?.
In recent data from 2012, it shows that on average only 33.9% of students score proficient or above. So when looking at the data is it really the teachers' fault or is it the lack of learning that standardized testing has brought upon the students. Many have made the conclusion that the data should not be processed into the teacher's ability to teach. No one student is the same, the standardized tests have errors therefore the test should not affect the teachers.
