In this debate, both candidates used a lot of language devices either to deliver their statements or attack the other candidate. Though the candidates often had the same purpose by using the same language devices, they used them in different ways. However, as a matter of fact, most people thought Hillary Clinton's language were more effective and persuasive. The first language device Hillary Clinton used was "Empathy." "Empathy" means understanding and entering into another's feelings (Wikipedia). It is a strategy that speakers usually use to make connections to the audience and to make them more convincing and credible. In the first segment called "Achieving prosperity", when the host asked them about how to create more jobs for American workers, Hillary Clinton mentioned his granddaughter's second birthday at the beginning, then demonstrated her ideas. By building an image of a loving grandmother, the audience would believe that she was actually thinking about how to make the country better for children because everyone knows that parents and grandparents always want the best for their younger generations. Furthermore, it removed the distance between Clinton and the audience. People would not see her a politician far away from them, but a common grandmother just like them.
Similarly, Donald Trump also used "Empathy" as an emotional appeal, but he tried a different approach known as "scapegoating". In the same segment, Trump mentioned that Americans were losing their jobs, which indicated that he understood the anger of those people who were unemployed and struggling for their lives.
