Song of the Whales

            Friedenscreich Hundertwasser-"Song of the Whales-.
This piece of artwork, which is called "Song of the Whales-, is one of three prints in a triptych made by Friedenscreich Hundertwasser, carved in Tokyo/Vienna from 1978-1979. The materials used were a Japanese woodcut in 34 colours in two versions; blue 1-150 and green 151-250. He was born in Vienna, Austria in 1928 with the name Friedrich Stowasser. In 1948, he changed his name to Friedenscreich Hundertwasser, which means "Peace-Kingdom Hundred-Water- because of his passion for greenpeace. He died on the 18th of February 2000 and was buried in the Garden of the Happy Dead under a tulip tree on his land in New Zealand.
In this artwork, there are people's faces with unusually shaped bodies. Hovering above them are three dark tadpole shapes which are whales. Two of the whales are entering on the right side of the picture. These objects are in the foreground. In the middle ground there are square objects which most resemble windows. The background is made up of stripes running horizontally across the picture and at the bottom there is a thick dark stripe. All the objects in this print are outlined with a black line. None off these lines are ruled lines as Friedenscreich Hundertwasser believes they are "unhealthy-. The shapes are unusual but still represent what they are supposed to be. "His use of colour is bold, and he has a strong sense of which colours work well together- The main colours used are different tones of green. The whales are dark brown, the people are made up of greens, yellows and reds and the windows are red and different blues. The texture looks rough and this may have been enforced because it was printed on wood.
The focal point in this print is the whales as they are large and dark which make them stand out. The secondary focal point would be the people as they also stand out because they are bight. Hundertwasser structured his work to look asymmetrical as the top half used light colours and had dark whales and the bottom half used dark colours with the thick dark stripe at the bottom and had light people.
