In Bertrand Russell's, The Value of Philosophy, he explains his point of view on what philosophy is really made of. I agree with Russell on his views of philosophy and I also feel that studying and interpreting philosophy broadens one's mind and way of thinking.
I agree with Russell when he says that philosophy affects people's lives in an indirect way. I believe that questioning things around us, even though we many never find a real answer, makes us smarter and brighter people. Living in a box will get you nowhere in life, but opening your eyes to the things around you, and constantly analyzing and questioning things opens a whole new world to you. Russell also points out that philosophy is unlike any other study. All other studies have answers and results, but philosophy is something that can never be answered, but can and will always be interpreted differently by different people. Russell also points out that part of a philosopher's job is to question and examine things around him, in order to keep his interest alive. Russell says that most people who do not open their minds to philosophy go on living the same boring and ordinary life that they have always had. In contrast, those who do let in the knowledge of philosophy go about living their lives in a completely different manner. Philosophy allows us to question everything and find our own reasons to unanswered questions. .
Just by reading this excerpt, I am honestly glad that I decided to enroll in this course. I want to be one of those people who see the world in a different perspective, and I am willing to open up to a new way of thinking. Russell also states that in questioning the things around us, we enrich our imagination and we no longer live in a close-minded society. .
