Hail the Almighty Hip-Hop Community

Therefore not everyone involved in the hip-hop society has the ability to have their views seen because there is only a select few who actually get to speak about it. So if less than one percent of Hip-Hop gets to be seen on TV or heard through radio waves, how is it that they have power? They don't. A select few get to voice their opinion on issues concerning music, our country, and many other things. But that does not give them or anyone else in the Hip-Hop community power.
             Some people might say that the figures that get on TV and in the public are the gems of the Hip-Hop culture and are probably best suited to represent the entire community. People feel that just because Hip-Hop originated in the urban environment that there is always going to be gang affiliation or other criminal behavior in the less fortunate. This isn't true at all. In actuality many of the true "gangstas" are the more prolific members of the Hip-Hop community. Take for example Snoop Dogg--one.
             of Hip-Hop's most prolific rappers--he is in the spotlight, representing his community; but it seems as if every time he is on the news or on TV it is because of some criminal behavior. On the other hand we have an organization like Hot 97's Hip-Hop symphony in New York City, these kids and young adults have spent their lives in poverty, but are trying to better their lives and their community by giving back. Rather than being out on the streets every day after school, these kids are together inside practicing their respectful instruments (Hip-Hop Symphony). I know that if you have never been exposed to this it probably seems like a dream world for the "ghetto" children. It's not however. There are programs like this throughout the United States; people just fail to see them because they are too busy watching figures like Snoop Dogg on TV being arrested for marijuana possession and other crimes. Through this example it is clear that Hip-Hop itself doesn't have political power because the positive members of the community are over-looked, and really have no input in anything.
