Ulysses S. Grant


            In order to earn the title of hero, someone must do something extraordinary. Throughout history many men and women have had to prove themselves to be heroes or heroines. One of the many men that was declared a hero is Ulysses Simpson Grant. Webster's Dictionary defines a hero as a person of distinguished courage and ability, admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities. Ulysses S. Grant fits the description of a hero because he accomplished many brave deeds and showed much courage during the time of his service in the Civil War. .
             When the Civil War broke out, Grant was working at his father's leather store. He did not believe in fighting or war, but he knew that his country needed him. After the war he said, "Although a soldier by profession, I have never felt any sort of fondness for war, and I have never advocated it, except as a means of peace."(http://saints.css.edu, July 24, 1997) Helping your country in a time of need is definitely considered a brave deed, especially when you are putting yourself in danger. .
             His first assignment in the Civil War was to command a small, unruly volunteer group. He whipped the group into shape and earned the rank of Brigadier General of volunteers. With his new rank and power, Grant wanted to win the Mississippi Valley. He used his strategic know-how to capture both Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. Grant told the Confederate commander, "No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted." (www.whitehouse.gov, April 10, 2002) By saying this, Grant showed the Confederates that he meant business. Grant was promoted to Major General of Volunteers. .
             Ulysses S. Grant's battle tactics and fearlessness was earning the respect of many. When an officer asked Grant if he felt fear on the battlefield, Grant said, "I never had time." (http://saints.css.edu, July 24, 1997) He started earning President Lincoln's respect. You can tell that he earned the President's respect because when many people asked President Lincoln to remove him from the army because of what happened at the Battle of Shiloh, he said, "I can't spare this man -- he fights.
