Sod Houses

During the latter part of the nineteenth century, many new families migrated into the Midwest in search of a better life. When many of them arrived, they had very little money and not much of an idea as to what the terrain and way of life would be like. After most people arrived, they found they had to build houses very differently than in the east. Most of the houses for the first and second generations in the Great Plains were made of sod, called sod houses or were dug into the side of hills, often referred to as dug outs. Then after the farmers got money they could build a house of lumber or log since these had to be shipped in. .
The family in this photograph is no exception. From looking at their photograph, one could come to many conclusions. They arrived to the Midwest in the early part of the twentieth century, maybe to find a better way of life or to try something different. They could be growing many crops, but the photo is too close to see what or even how many. From the look of the foreground the terrain is very dry and arid thus making crop growing hard and laborious. .
After then looking at the family, the viewer can tell that they do probably have crops. All of the members look as though they are rough and dirty, indicating that they do work very hard, probably back-breaking labor. The men in the family all look at though they just got done out in the fields because their faces are dirty as well as their clothes. Two of them are also sitting showing they are probably tired. Then the woman looks very serious, as though all she does is work around the house to keep the men clothed and fed, and then she might even go into the fields with them when they need extra hands. There are also no children pictured, so they do need all the hands they can get. Since the photo is so close, there are also no horses or a wagon to be seen. The one animal that is visible is a domesticated dog.
