Where Will our Children Play?

"There was a time a beautiful world where humans and animals lived together in complete harmony loving and respecting each other. It was a world with deep forests and green lands which soils rich in nutrients gave the best of its crops to nourish millions of species. Its big oceans lakes and rivers were home for millions of gorgeous creatures that swam peacefully in clear water. The immense blue sky provided such a pure air that every breath purified our souls. Every glimpse upward to the clouds, the sun, the stars, and the moon made us feel fortunate of being alive and enjoy the majestic beauty of our earth." This is the picture of a world we still are fortunate to enjoy. It still maintains, despite its deterioration, some of these enchanted attributes enjoyable for some more than for others, but could our future generations enjoy the world we have today as well as we do? Will be this picture of a world just available to decorate the walls in the future houses, or just a bed story that our children will tell their grandchildren? The answer is in us. Just our actions in the present could make possible to give this legacy to the future generations. Just by applying a simple concept: Sustainability. .
The concept of Sustainability has become very popular in the last two decades. Although twenty years ago it was mostly used in environment related subject, nowadays is being broadly applied in different areas associated to human development. As we know, the word sustain or maintain means to make something continue to exist. The word sustainability from an environmental point of view suggests our ability of getting what we need from nature in such a moderate way that allows the future generations to meet their needs. It implies to allow the biotic and abiotic environment to continue existing indefinitely instead of driving them to go into a decline provoked for human pressure. Thinking in a sustainable way would be to respect other species and their habitats assuring their perpetuation, consume strictly just what we need, and preserve the world's beauty and perfection so the future generations will be able to enjoy it as well as we do now.
