Go Ask Alice

The book I read was Go Ask Alice, author unknown. It was published in 1971 by Avon books. In this book, there were many different teen issues such as starting over at a new school, problems with family relationships and discovering sexuality. However, the most important teen issues discussed in the book were drug abuse and death from drug abuse.
Drug abuse can be defined as a problem that can raise crime rate and anti-social behavior, also risking the lives of the young teens that have the problem. According to the National Commission, the social meaning of the word "drug", generally will focus on genetic defects, toxicity, fatality, dependence on the drug and risks of taking in high doses. All drugs, when used at high dose levels, can be dangerous. A drug overdose can cause serious physical and or mental damage.
In the book, some of the characters that experienced drug use were Alice, Chris, Jill, Richie, Ted, Sheila and Babbie. It takes place during the late 1960s. This was a time when experimenting with drugs was not uncommon. Throughout the book Alice experimented with such drugs as acid, marijuana and heroin. Because of her drug abuse problem, Alice ended up in an insane asylum. Also, as a result to her drug abuse, like thousands of people, Alice died about three weeks after leaving the asylum due to a drug overdose.
This book Go Ask Alice was realistic. It was the diary entries of a real young girl facing a drug abuse problem. Alice tried a number of times to come clean from drugs and was even placed into an insane asylum. However, it never helped for long. If I were in that situation, I would have looked to someone for help. I would have prolonged the help as long as I could to try to make sure it wouldn't happen again. .
I feel that, in many ways, this book could help someone with a drug abuse problem. By reading and understanding this book, you can see the effects that drugs have on a person and the way they can dominate a person's life.
