Affirmative Action

Under the California Constitution the state government is forbidden from granting special treatment or discriminating against any citizen based on race or skin color. Then why are the people of California forced to answer questions about their ethnicity on many types of applications? Your ethnicity or race should not give you any advantage in getting accepted into a university or help with job placement. If everyone should be treated equally, then asking for your ethnicity on educational and job applications does not need to be there.
If everyone is supposed to be treated equally then why does your ethnicity matter? A citizen should be able to fill out an application and get accepted based on their achievements and credibility, not based on their skin color or where they live. For example the California University system in the past has asked for two to three pages all on your ethnical background of you and your parents. Do they really need to know all that just because you are applying to college? Why would it matter what race you are, admission should be based simply on academics and determination? A citizen of a racial minority with a lower grade point average and SAT scores should not be granted admission over a citizen of the majority just because of their skin color. If everyone is equal then there should be the same standards for all applying students and there should be no exceptions.
Job applications should be handled in the same manner. Whoever is more qualified and has better credentials should get the job, no matter what their ethnical background is. A job is a way to make a living, and if you work hard and are able to compete for a position, and prove to be just as valuable as another person, you should not be turned away because of your ethnicity or natural origin. When filling out an application for a job, your skin color should not matter; your references and experience are the only things that should matter.
